‘Holkham is the most extensive, diverse and dramatic nature reserve on a coastline famous for nature reserves. Windswept tidelines, a maze of creeks and saltings, miles of dunes and sandspits, shady pinewoods, green pastures and marshes: the mix of habitats and the blend of wildlife make Holkham NNR a unique place, somewhere to catch your breath in a busy world.’
This quote describes this beautiful reserve perfectly! It stretches from Burnham Norton to Blakeney and covers about 4,000 hectares and it is possible to explore most of the area by following footpaths. We visited different parts of this reserve over the week and on Thursday, hired bikes and cycled virtually all through it. It is a fantastic mixture of habitats.
The pine wood path was one of my favourite parts and I spent a very happy couple of hours taking photos of the hundreds of darters in these sunny glades. I think these are all just common darters????
