Big Garden Birdwatch 2017 … plus more camera trapping!

I can hardly believe that a year has passed since Big Garden Birdwatch 2016! Time is certainly flying past. I have been watching my garden closely all this weekend. Helped by all the cameras I have, I am able to have eyes all over the garden, giving a really good view of the number of birds around at any one time. Just about all the regular visitors showed up, but sadly my bullfinches have not been seen for a week or so, so they did not feature in this year’s list. The blackcap male has continued to guard the Hub feeders , ensuring just about no other species can visit! The only species to stand up to him have been the woodpecker and the nuthatch.

Occasionally, when he wasn’t looking , the others sneaked in and I managed a few images…..

My final list for Big Garden Birdwatch 2017 is:

Blackbird, House sparrow, Blue tit, Great tit, Coal tit, Long tailed tit, Blackcap, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Wood pigeon, Nuthatch, Buzzard, Robin, Dunnock, Collared dove, Wren, Great spotted woodpecker

18 species (out of the 50 that have been recorded here)

Yesterday, I posted my first images from my DSLR camera trap set up. With varying light conditions today, I had another go. Here are some of my images from today’s experiments. A bit of a faster shutter speed when the light was better, meaning I could get a bit more depth of field. Still need to get it faster for those birds that whizz in and out, triggering the camera after they have left! I had a lot of images of an empty tree stump today. Really pleased with some of these, especially the nuthatch images.

I have cropped some of these shots, but done little else, other than minor adjustments to levels.

My mind is now whizzing with ideas of what I want to try next with this set-up….. just need to try to squeeze it in around all the myriad of other work I have this week…. maybe it will be next weekend’s project!
