At Yew View, we had been watching a squirrel take over our lovely Barn Owl Box! With no owls showing interest, we were happy that someone had chosen to take up residence of this rather posh abode. It was soon apparent that this was a female and that she was expecting a family! Lining her nest with soft materials, it looked mighty cosy in there and, as she grew fatter, she spent more time sleeping in there.
Checking the footage at the end of July, it was apparent that she had given birth and two tiny babies could be seen.
The beginning of the video shows her in the box with her newly born kittens… you have to look closely! (up to 2 mins 25 secs)
What happened the very next day after their birth, surprised us all (from 2 mins 26 secs) Some of the video is captured from inside the box and some from a PTZ camera we had trained on the outside of the box.
If you didn’t spot it… the female removes her tiny babies from the nest and disappears off camera with them…..
We have no idea why this happened and, despite checking the area, we could not find where she had chosen as her new drey site………
